Overall, ONU devices can be classified according to various application scenarios such as SFU, HGU, SBU, MDU, MTU, etc.

1. SFU type ONU deployment

The advantage of this deployment method lies in the relatively abundant network resources, which are suitable for independent households in FTTH scenarios. It can ensure that the user end has broadband access function, but does not involve more complex home gateway functions. The SFU in this environment has two common forms: providing both Ethernet and POTS interfaces; Only Ethernet interface is provided. It should be noted that SFU can provide coaxial cable function in both forms, facilitating the implementation of CATV services. It can also be used in conjunction with home gateways to facilitate the provision of value-added services. This scenario is also applicable to enterprises that do not require TDM data exchange.

2. HGU type ONU deployment

The deployment strategy of the HGU type ONU terminal is similar to that of the SFU type, with only hardware integration of the functions of both ONU and RG. Compared to SFU, it can achieve more complex control and management functions. The U-shaped interface in this deployment scenario is built-in within the physical device and does not provide an interface. If xDSLRG type devices are needed, multiple types of interfaces can be directly connected to the home network, equivalent to a home gateway with an EPON uplink interface, mainly used in FTTH scenarios.

3. SBU type ONU deployment

This deployment plan is more suitable for independent enterprise users to build networks in the FTTO application mode, and is based on enterprise changes in SFU and HGU deployment scenarios. The network in this deployment environment can support broadband access terminal functions, providing users with various data interfaces including El interface, Ethernet interface, and POTS interface, which can meet the needs of enterprises in data communication, voice communication, and TDM dedicated line services. The U-shaped interface in the environment can provide enterprises with a frame structure with multiple attributes, which is relatively powerful.

4. MDU type ONU deployment

This deployment plan is suitable for network construction in multi-user FTTC, FTTN, FTTCab, FTTZ and other multi application modes. If enterprise level users do not have a demand for TDM services, this solution can also be used for EPON network deployment. This deployment solution can provide broadband data communication services for multiple users, including Ethernet/IP services, VoIP services, and CATV services, with strong data transmission capabilities. Each communication port can correspond to a network user, so its network utilization rate is higher compared to others.

5. MTU type ONU deployment

This deployment plan is a commercial change based on the MDU deployment plan, which can provide multiple interface services including Ethernet interface and POTS interface to multiple enterprise users, and can meet the various business needs of enterprises such as voice, data, TDM dedicated line services, etc. If combined with a slot based implementation structure, it can achieve richer and more powerful business functions.
