ONU (Optical Network Unit) and router are two different network devices that play different roles in the network.

ONU, also known as optical modem, is a device in fiber optic access networks (FTTH). Its main function is to convert high-speed optical signals into digital signals that can be recognized by computers to support high-speed Internet connection. ONU usually includes Ethernet port and supports wireless network connection, making the network at home or office unobstructed.

A router is a gateway device that connects two or more networks. It can read the address information in each packet and decide how to transmit these packets. Routers can understand different protocols, such as Ethernet or TCP/IP, and can analyze the destination address of data packets from various networks, convert non TCP/IP network addresses to TCP/IP addresses, and then send the data packets to the designated location based on the selected optimal route.

In summary, ONU mainly undertakes the task of converting fiber optic signals into digital signals, while routers transmit data between wide area networks (WAN) and local area networks (LAN), select the best data transmission path, and perform functions such as network address translation (NAT).
