ONU device, also known as Optical Network Unit, is a device used for fiber optic user access. Its main function is to connect optical fiber to user families or enterprises, form optical fiber broadband access network, and realize high-speed Internet access. ONU devices are usually used in conjunction with OLT devices (optical line terminals). The former is responsible for receiving optical signals and converting them into electrical signals to supply to user terminal devices, while the latter is responsible for transmitting data to the fiber optic backbone network.
ONU devices have multiple Ethernet ports for connecting user devices such as computers, IP phones, or routers. It can also provide other functions, such as voice communication, video transmission and Internet access. The ONU device consists of core functional circuits, common units for power supply and management, and communication interfaces. The core functional blocks include user and service reuse functions, transmission reuse functions, and ODN interface functions. The user and service reuse function includes assembling information from each user, allocating information to be transmitted to each user, and connecting individual service interface functions; The transmission multiplexing function includes analyzing the signals from the ODN and extracting the parts belonging to the ONU, as well as arranging the information to be sent to the ODN in a reasonable manner; The ODN interface function provides a series of optical physical interface functions, including optical/electrical and electrical/optical conversion.
ONU devices are divided into active optical network units and passive optical network units. Active optical network units include optical receivers, uplink optical transmitters, multiple bridge amplifiers, and network monitoring devices, while passive optical network units do not include these active devices. ONU devices can be classified according to various application scenarios such as SFU, HGU, SBU, MDU, MTU, etc.
